Syracuse University Library Associates Courier contains articles relating to the holdings of the Syracuse University Library, especially the Department of Special Collections, and to the interests of the Library Associates membership.
The cover illustrates a "Document of Honorary Citizenship of the City of Berlin for Leopold von Ranke, signed by members of the Municipal Council of Berlin on 31 March 1885. Watercolor by Ernst Albert Fischer-Corlin. According to Dr. Siegfried Baur, in the upper right corner is the high school of Frankfurt/Oder, where Ranke started as a teacher. In the lower right corner is the old University of Berlin; nearby a cherub holds a document roll listing titles of Ranke's work. In the lower left corner is the town hall of Berlin where Berolina, the city's patron, extends her arm. In the upper left is the goddess Justitia and the muse of the historians, Clio. Other personifications include Caesar, Otto the Great, Pope Gregory VII, Dante, Luther, Columbus, Louis XIV, Frederick the Great, and Napoleon. The text honors Ranke as 'the one who enlarged the glory of our university for sixty years; who brought the forgotten folios of the archives back to life; who reached the highest point above opposing parties, like a seer, a prophet, to understand the real events of mankind; who brought back to German literature the great art of historical writing of the Greek . . . and who made our city a center of modern historiography by doing his silent work. . . .' The Document was purchased for the Library with funds from Joseph and Elaine Spector."
