AIGA 50 Books/50 Covers

AIGA 50 Books/50 Covers' focus is to bring attention to the works that are "exemplar of the craft and effect of good design." Black Farmers in America, printed by The Stinehour Press, was one of only 100 outstanding books and book cover designs chosen in this year's competition from more than 900 entries. The University Press of Kentucky published the title, which features 110 photographs by John Francis Ficara in a 144-page, 10.5" x 11.25" casebound format.

It has been a long-standing tradition of The Stinehour Press to design and print a typographic poster that celebrates the artist's fancy as well as the nuances of type. This year's poster was developed in collaboration with the Center for Cartoon Studies, and was designed by one of their many talented students.

The selected design theme ties into an individual's perception, which allows a viewer to see the typeface as not simply large or small, but rather as near or far. This element of using type as an object brings renewed emphasis to the letters of our alphabet. Inspiration for the abstract landscape design came from George Herriman's Krazy Kat, a cartoonist who produced works in the early 1900's. A respect for history and a deep-rooted connection to the tradition of artistic excellence is at the heart of both the Center for Cartoon Studies and The Stinehour Press, which we feel is successfully conveyed in the poster's design.

Gold Ink Winner: Silver Award

The Photography of Walter LeCroy, the 2001 calendar printed at The Stinehour Press, has won awards in two prestigious print competitions, The Gold Ink Awards and The 2001 Premier Prints Awards.

The Gold Ink Awards, in existence for 14 years, are conducted by Printing Impressions and Print Media, and this year were sponsored by companies such as Heidelberg, Kodak, Kodak Polychrome, and Xerox. The contest had almost 2,000 entries in several print fields, with 18 candidates in the "Calendar" category. The Photography of Walter LeCroy won the Silver Award, or second prize. Winners are to be announced in the September issue of the sponsoring magazine, and will be honored at the Gold Ink Awards on September 10, 2001, at McCormick Place in Chicago.

The Premier Print Awards are run by Printing Industries of America and Graphic Arts Information Network. The Photography of Walter LeCroy competed with 5,555 entries and was one of just 1,366 to receive an award, a Certificate of Merit.

Head of Sports Images International, Bob Brandt, with artist Helen Rundell, were on press for the approval of the pressrun of the edition print featuring golf greats Arnold Palmer and Jack Nicklaus. Each of these prints will be signed by the artist as well as by the two renowned golfers, and are available through Sports Images International in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania [1-800-307-6868].

The prints are done on Somerset Textured paper and are printed as dry trapped, continuous tone, four-color images, in a unique process developed by Mel Hunter of Polaris Press. When the four colors have been laid down, the print is reviewed by Bob, Helen, and Mel, and, as in this case, three additional touch plates were dry-trap overprinted to highlight specific areas in the image.

The dry-trap printing process demands a high degree of accuracy in registration and color matching. We are pleased to offer this custom press- work in order to meet the exacting needs of this special project.
